So often our lives are nothing more than boredom and monotony. Very seldom do you find a person who is excited about anything or someone who actually enjoys what they do in life. Many see no future in their employment and little hope for their marriage. Many lack a challenge, and harbor a strong doubt that things will ever change.
To many, life is chasing the wind in a never-ending cycle. They try vacations, travel, booze, entertainment, food, sexual escapades, and a dozen other things to find happiness.
If anyone knew about life, it was Solomon. The mere mention of his name creates images of wealth, power, and wisdom. When his life was over, he gave a condensed version of priorities in Ecclesiastes Chapter 12: “Let us hear the whole conclusion of the matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
Often I talk with people who say, “I just want to be happy.” Man is incurable in his search for fulfillment, joy, happiness, and contentment. The world we live in is constantly telling us what to expect out of life. However, according to God’s Word, this world does not and cannot satisfy. There are fleeting pleasures and momentary satisfactions, but no lasting fulfillments apart from Christ.
Solomon had found this to be true. Friend, we are a blessed people and can be thankful for all the material blessings God has bestowed on us, but we should never let things take the place of God in our lives. Let’s put God first and contentment will ultimately follow.
