Often times we’ve sung that favorite song, “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear, what privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.” It never loses its poignancy for the resounding fact that Jesus, the Creator of the Universe, wants to be my friend!
The best friend anyone can have is Jesus. How the Lord wants us to grow in our relationship with Him! To have a true friend always causes our lives to be enriched. Friendship with Jesus does much more than that. For instance, it elevates us. It lifts you up and causes you to be a better you. Jesus never comes down to our level – He wants us to be lifted to His. What an ennobling thought – to be the friend of Jesus Christ!
To be his friend also enlarges us. We gain a new family when we join God’s family. What a gathering of friends we as Christians have. Without Jesus think of all the friendships we would never have acquired. The greatest people on the face of the earth are the people of God.
It should also be understood that in all friendships there are costs involved. Often people never gain close associations for fear that they’ll be hurt. To stand for Jesus may cost us some misunderstandings or loss of friends. It cost Him to be our friend. He ultimately gave his life so we could be brought nigh to God! C.S. Lewis states, “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be broken.” However, Jesus encourages us as his people to love and befriend one another.
Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
May we count it the honor it is to be the friend of our Lord. May we stand proud in a godless world to be counted His friend.
