One has only to check into a hospital or inquire about the well-begin of a patient and the phrase “vital signs” will probably be used. Vital signs are the respiration, heart beat and blood pressure of a patient. Other observations are made and then tests are given, but these signs differ from all other signs. They are vital. When a person has no vital signs, he or she is dead.
For everything that is physical, there is a spiritual parallel. Just as there are physical vital signs, there are spiritual ones.
The first spiritual vital sign to look for in yourself is your love for other Christians. God’s word says that if we say we love Him but do not love our fellow Christians, then we have lied about our love for Him. Thus, it is vital that we love God’s people.
A desire for a new life is a certain vital sign of spiritual life. People who are spiritually alive are changed people. They have a new desire for right and hatred for evil. A hunger for God’s word is a vital sign. Just as a healthy person has a good appetite for physical food, healthy Christians hunger for God’s Word.
Another vital sign of a spiritual life is an enlightened conscience – a new awareness of right and wrong. The Holy Spirit, indwelling the believer makes him sensitive to things that he once routinely practiced.
We all need to take our spiritual "vitals" from time to time. May I encourage you to check yours so that you may live this life abundantly in Jesus.
